Many people fondly remembered the Audiolab 8000A integrated amplifier which first appeared in 1983. Perhaps there are some still in use and giving good service to their owners after 25 years. From a one product with a ‘do or die’ attitude, Audiolab has grown into a multinational company employing resources from all over the world to keep and maintain the quality of the product at a price that people used to pay for in an entry level amplifier.

Fast forward the new century, after the first decade, Audiolab is not only back in the forefront of high performance electronics but have extensive re-engineered the entire range of electronics given recent advances in component technology.

The 8000A gave way to the 8000S in 1993, which adds improved circuit topology (which improve the sound), remote control and a slight increase in power from 50 watts to 60 watts per channel. The 8000S is still available till today! It was Audiolab’s entry-level amplifier back then, but now we have a ‘stripped 8000S’, which became the ‘8000SE’. Stripped off conveniences such as remote volume control, remote source selector and single set of speaker cable binding posts (the 8000S have got two for bi-wiring convenience), the identical powered (a conservative 60 watts x 2) 8000SE is closer to the original 8000A than ever! All for under Sing$1000!

Whether it’s an 8000S or an 8000SE, it’s a great starting point for a good two-channel system. The low cost of entry for these two amplifiers means more could be spent on better speakers or even better cables. Many users of Audiolab amplifiers have partnered their amplifier with many distinguished loudspeakers, some of which are many times the selling price of the Audiolab amplifier and have very good results! If you are thinking about pre/power, the 8000S and 8000SE can be run as a preamp either for biamping or the speaker system may call for a lot more power.
